The new command is `rndc memprof`. The memory profiling status is also
reported inside `rndc status`. The status also shows whether named can
toggle memory profiling or not and if the server is built with jemalloc.
the isc_mem allocation functions can no longer fail; as a result,
ISC_R_NOMEMORY is now rarely used: only when an external library
such as libjson-c or libfstrm could return NULL. (even in
these cases, arguably we should assert rather than returning
ISC_R_NOMEMORY.)
code and comments that mentioned ISC_R_NOMEMORY have been
cleaned up, and the following functions have been changed to
type void, since (in most cases) the only value they could
return was ISC_R_SUCCESS:

(the exception is dns_view_create(), which could have returned
other error codes in the event of a crypto library failure when
calling isc_file_sanitize(), but that should be a RUNTIME_CHECK
anyway.)
Since BIND 9 headers are not longer public, there's no reason to keep
the ISC_LANG_BEGINDECL and ISC_LANG_ENDDECL macros to support including
them from C++ projects.
Having zone statements that are also top blocks is confusing, and if
we want to add more in the future (which I suspect will be for
generalized notifications, multi-signer), we need to duplicate a lot
of code.
Remove top blocks 'parental-agents' and 'primaries' and just have one
top block 'remote-servers' that you can refer to with zone statements.
This commit adds support for timestamps in iso8601 format with timezone
when logging. This is exposed through the iso8601-tzinfo printtime
suboption.
It also makes the new logging format the default for -g output,
hopefully removing the need for custom timestamp parsing in scripts.
DNSRPS was the API for a commercial implementation of Response-Policy
Zones that was supposedly better. However, it was never open-sourced
and has only ever been available from a single vendor. This goes against
the principle that the open-source edition of BIND 9 should contain only
features that are generally available and universal.
This commit removes the DNSRPS implementation from BIND 9. It may be
reinstated in the subscription edition if there's enough interest from
customers, but it would have to be rewritten as a plugin (hook) instead
of hard-wiring it again in so many places.
On systems where root access is needed to configure privileged
ports, we don't want to fully relinquish root privileges until
after the control channel (which typically runs on port 953) has
been established.
named_os_changeuser() now takes a boolean argument 'permanent'.
This allows us to switch the effective userid temporarily with
named_os_changeuser(false) and restore it with named_os_restoreuser(),
before permanently dropping privileges with named_os_changeuser(true).
Add the code and documentation required to provide KSR import using
rndc. This is just the command, and the feature is at this point in
time still not implemented.
Remove the complicated mechanism that could be (in theory) used by
external libraries to register new categories and modules with
statically defined lists in <isc/log.h>. This is similar to what we
have done for <isc/result.h> result codes. All the libraries are now
internal to BIND 9, so we don't need to provide a mechanism to register
extra categories and modules.
Add isc_logconfig_get() function to get the current logconfig and use
the getter to replace most of the little dancing around setting up
logging in the tools. Thus:

For thread-safety, isc_logconfig_get() should be surrounded by RCU read
lock, but since we never use isc_logconfig_get() in threaded context,
the only place where it is actually used (but not really needed) is
named_log_init().
The OpenSSL 1.x Engines support has been deprecated in the OpenSSL 3.x
and is going to be removed. Remove the OpenSSL Engine support in favor
of OpenSSL Providers.
Some external log file rotation programs use signals to tell programs
to close log files. SIGHUP can be used to do this but it also does
a full reconfiguration. Configure named to accept SIGUSR1 as a
signal to close log files.
Refactor dns_dnssec_findmatchingkeys and dns_dnssec_keylistfromrdataset
to take into account the key store directories in case the zone is using
dnssec-policy (kasp). Add 'kasp' and 'keystores' parameters.
This requires the keystorelist to be stored inside the zone structure.
The calls to these functions in the DNSSEC tools can use NULL as the
kasp value, as dnssec-signzone does not (yet) support dnssec-policy,
and key collision is checked inside the directory where it is created.
The lock-file configuration (both from configuration file and -X
argument to named) has better alternatives nowadays. Modern process
supervisor should be used to ensure that a single named process is
running on a given configuration.
Alternatively, it's possible to wrap the named with flock(1).
Instead of high number of dispatches (4 * named_g_udpdisp)[1], make the
dispatches bound to threads and make dns_dispatchset_t create a dispatch
for each thread (event loop).
This required couple of other changes:
1. The dns_dispatch_createudp() must be called on loop, so the isc_tid()
is already initialized - changes to nsupdate and mdig were required.
2. The dns_requestmgr had only a single dispatch per v4 and v6. Instead
of using single dispatch, use dns_dispatchset_t for each protocol -
this is same as dns_resolver.
Add an option to enable/disable inline-signing inside the
dnssec-policy clause. The existing inline-signing option that is
set in the zone clause takes priority, but if it is omitted, then the
value that is set in dnssec-policy is taken.
The built-in policies use inline-signing.
This means that if you want to use the default policy without
inline-signing you either have to set it explicitly in the zone
clause:

This also means that if you are going insecure with a dynamic zone,
the built-in "insecure" policy needs to be accompanied with
"inline-signing no;".
the prior practice of passing a dns_name containing the
expanded name of an algorithm to dns_tsigkey_create() and
dns_tsigkey_createfromkey() is unnecessarily cumbersome;
we can now pass the algorithm number instead.
use the ISC_REFCOUNT attach/detach implementation in dns/tsig.c
so that detailed tracing can be used during refactoring.
dns_tsig_keyring_t has been renamed dns_tsigkeyring_t so the type
and the attach/detach function names will match.
it was possible to add a TSIG key to more than one TSIG
keyring at a time, and this was in fact happening with the
session key, which was generated once and then added to the
keyrings for each view as it was configured.
this has been corrected and a REQUIRE added to dns_tsigkeyring_add()
to prevent it from happening again.
isc_loopmgr_pause can't be called before isc_loopmgr_run is
called as the thread ids are not yet valid. If there is a
fatal error before isc_loopmgr_run is run then don't call
isc_loopmgr_pause.
for testing purposes, we need to be able to specify a library path from
which to load the dnsrps implementation. this can now be done with the
"dnsrps-library" option.
DNSRPS can now be enabled in configure regardless of whether librpz.so
is currently installed on the system.
without diffie-hellman TKEY negotiation, some other code is
now effectively dead or unnecessary, and can be cleaned up:
- the rndc tsig-list and tsig-delete commands.
- a nonoperational command-line option to dnssec-keygen that
was documented as being specific to DH.
- the section of the ARM that discussed TKEY/DH.
- the functions dns_tkey_builddeletequery(), processdeleteresponse(),
and tkey_processgssresponse(), which are unused.
instead of using the SDB API as a wrapper to register and
unregister and provide a call framework for the builtin databases,
this commit flattens things so that the builtin databases implement
dns_db directly.
move all dns_sdb code into bin/named/builtin.c, which is the
only place from which it's called.
(note this is temporary: later we'll refactor builtin so that it's a
standalone dns_db implementation on its own instead of using SDB
as a wrapper.)
this function was just a front-end for gethostname(). it was
needed when we supported windows, which has a different function
for looking up the hostname; it's not needed any longer.
as there is no further use of isc_task in BIND, this commit removes
it, along with isc_taskmgr, isc_event, and all other related types.
functions that accepted taskmgr as a parameter have been cleaned up.
as a result of this change, some functions can no longer fail, so
they've been changed to type void, and their callers have been
updated accordingly.
the tasks table has been removed from the statistics channel and
the stats version has been updated. dns_dyndbctx has been changed
to reference the loopmgr instead of taskmgr, and DNS_DYNDB_VERSION
has been udpated as well.
change functions using isc_taskmgr_beginexclusive() to use
isc_loopmgr_pause() instead.
also, removed an unnecessary use of exclusive mode in
named_server_tcptimeouts().
most functions that were implemented as task events because they needed
to be running in a task to use exclusive mode have now been changed
into loop callbacks instead. (the exception is catz, which is being
changed in a separate commit because it's a particularly complex change.)
the built-in trust anchors in named and delv are sufficent for
validation. named still needs to be able to load trust anchors from
a bind.keys file for testing purposes, but it doesn't need to be
the default behavior.
we now only load trust anchors from a file if explicitly specified
via the "bindkeys-file" option in named or the "-a" command line
argument to delv. documentation has been cleaned up to remove references
to /etc/bind.keys.
Closes#3850.
named formerly reserved a set of dispatch objects for use when
sending requests from user-specified source ports. this objects
are no longer used and have been removed.
DSCP has not been fully working since the network manager was
introduced in 9.16, and has been completely broken since 9.18.
This seems to have caused very few difficulties for anyone,
so we have now marked it as obsolete and removed the
implementation.
To ensure that old config files don't fail, the code to parse
dscp key-value pairs is still present, but a warning is logged
that the feature is obsolete and should not be used. Nothing is
done with configured values, and there is no longer any
range checking.
The only function left in the isc_resource API was setting the file
limit. Replace the whole unit with a simple getrlimit to check the
maximum value of RLIMIT_NOFILE and set the maximum back to rlimit_cur.
This is more compatible than trying to set RLIMIT_UNLIMITED on the
RLIMIT_NOFILE as it doesn't work on Linux (see man 5 proc on
/proc/sys/fs/nr_open), neither it does on Darwin kernel (see man 2
getrlimit).
The only place where the maximum value could be raised under privileged
user would be BSDs, but the `named_os_adjustnofile()` were not called
there before. We would apply the increased limits only on Linux and Sun
platforms.
After deprecating the operating system limits settings (coresize,
datasize, files and stacksize), mark them as ancient and remove the code
that sets the values from config.
Previously:
* applications were using isc_app as the base unit for running the
application and signal handling.
* networking was handled in the netmgr layer, which would start a
number of threads, each with a uv_loop event loop.
* task/event handling was done in the isc_task unit, which used
netmgr event loops to run the isc_event calls.
In this refactoring:
* the network manager now uses isc_loop instead of maintaining its
own worker threads and event loops.
* the taskmgr that manages isc_task instances now also uses isc_loopmgr,
and every isc_task runs on a specific isc_loop bound to the specific
thread.
* applications have been updated as necessary to use the new API.
* new ISC_LOOP_TEST macros have been added to enable unit tests to
run isc_loop event loops. unit tests have been updated to use this
where needed.
* isc_timer was rewritten using the uv_timer, and isc_timermgr_t was
completely removed; isc_timer objects are now directly created on the
isc_loop event loops.
* the isc_timer API has been simplified. the "inactive" timer type has
been removed; timers are now stopped by calling isc_timer_stop()
instead of resetting to inactive.
* isc_manager now creates a loop manager rather than a timer manager.
* modules and applications using isc_timer have been updated to use the
new API.
this command runs dns_adb_dumpquota() to display all servers
in the ADB that are being actively fetchlimited by the
fetches-per-server controls (i.e, servers with a nonzero average
timeout ratio or with the quota having been reduced from the
default value).
the "fetchlimit" system test has been updated to use the
new command to check quota values instead of "rndc dumpdb".
The isc_task_onshutdown() was used to post event that should be run when
the task is being shutdown. This could happen explicitly in the
isc_test_shutdown() call or implicitly when we detach the last reference
to the task and there are no more events posted on the task.
This whole task onshutdown mechanism just makes things more complicated,
and it's easier to post the "shutdown" events when we are shutting down
explicitly and the existing code already always knows when it should
shutdown the task that's being used to execute the onshutdown events.
Replace the isc_task_onshutdown() calls with explicit calls to execute
the shutdown tasks.
It might be useful to display built-in configuration with all its
values. It should make it easier to test what default values has changed
in a new release.
