method of executing commands remotely. There are no rexec clients in
the FreeBSD tree, and the client function rexec(3) is present only in
libcompat. It has been documented as "obsolete" since 4.3BSD, and its
use has been discouraged in the man page for over 10 years.
struct ifnet or the layer 2 common structure it was embedded in have
been replaced with a struct ifnet pointer to be filled by a call to the
new function, if_alloc(). The layer 2 common structure is also allocated
via if_alloc() based on the interface type. It is hung off the new
struct ifnet member, if_l2com.
This change removes the size of these structures from the kernel ABI and
will allow us to better manage them as interfaces come and go.
Other changes of note:
- Struct arpcom is no longer referenced in normal interface code.
Instead the Ethernet address is accessed via the IFP2ENADDR() macro.
To enforce this ac_enaddr has been renamed to _ac_enaddr.
- The second argument to ether_ifattach is now always the mac address
from driver private storage rather than sometimes being ac_enaddr.

docs. Last I heard, Harlan Stenn was considering using FreeBSD's
pages as a starting point for the ISC NTP distribution's own pages.
If that happens, everyone wins and these can go away, to be replaced
by imported versions in contrib/ntp.
-I Use only the index file for determining if a package is out of
date. This is much faster than using the version number from a
port's Makefile, at the expense of potentially giving an incor-
rect result if the index file is out of date.
Without this option, the index file is only consulted if "make -V PKGNAME"
cannot be used.

catch all transient errors. This fixes situations where transient
error conditions such as network interfaces losing carrier signals
or the system running out of mbufs would result in the permanent
removal of forwarding syslog messages.

connections to Bluetooth HID device. As soon as Bluetooth HID device
is powered off (or goes out of RF range) the stack will terminate both
connections. File descriptors for both connections will become active
on next select(2) call. Because bthidd(8) processes file descriptors
in order, it will detect descriptor for one of the closed connections
first and kill the session. However, there is still a second (active)
descriptor that used to point to the same session. bthidd(8) used to
assert() if it cant find session by file descriptor, which was wrong.

This fixes it so that the Windows driver for my Cisco Aironet 340 PCMCIA
card works again. (Yes, I know the an(4) driver supports this card natively,
but it's the only PCMCIA device I have with a Windows XP driver.)
Have pmcstat(8) and pmccontrol(8) use these APIs.
Return PMC class-related constants (PMC widths and capabilities)
with the OP GETCPUINFO call leaving OP PMCINFO to return only the
dynamic information associated with a PMC (i.e., whether enabled,
owner pid, reload count etc.).
Allow pmc_read() (i.e., OPS PMCRW) on active self-attached PMCs to
get upto-date values from hardware since we can guarantee that the
hardware is running the correct PMC at the time of the call.
Bug fixes:
- (x86 class processors) Fix a bug that prevented an RDPMC
instruction from being recognized as permitted till after the
attached process had context switched out and back in again after
a pmc_start() call.
Tighten the rules for using RDPMC class instructions: a GETMSR
OP is now allowed only after an OP ATTACH has been done by the
PMC's owner to itself. OP GETMSR is not allowed for PMCs that
track descendants, for PMCs attached to processes other than
their owner processes.
- (P4/HTT processors only) Fix a bug that caused the MI and MD
layers to get out of sync. Add a new MD operation 'get_config()'
as part of this fix.
- Allow multiple system-mode PMCs at the same row-index but on
different CPUs to be allocated.
- Reject allocation of an administratively disabled PMC.
Misc. code cleanups and refactoring. Improve a few comments.

here on in, if_ndis.ko will be pre-built as a module, and can be built
into a static kernel (though it's not part of GENERIC). Drivers are
created using the new ndisgen(8) script, which uses ndiscvt(8) under
the covers, along with a few other tools. The result is a driver module
that can be kldloaded into the kernel.
A driver with foo.inf and foo.sys files will be converted into
foo_sys.ko (and foo_sys.o, for those who want/need to make static
kernels). This module contains all of the necessary info from the
.INF file and the driver binary image, converted into an ELF module.
You can kldload this module (or add it to /boot/loader.conf) to have
it loaded automatically. Any required firmware files can be bundled
into the module as well (or converted/loaded separately).
Also, add a workaround for a problem in NdisMSleep(). During system
bootstrap (cold == 1), msleep() always returns 0 without actually
sleeping. The Intel 2200BG driver uses NdisMSleep() to wait for
the NIC's firmware to come to life, and fails to load if NdisMSleep()
doesn't actually delay. As a workaround, if msleep() (and hence
ndis_thsuspend()) returns 0, use a hard DELAY() to sleep instead).
This is not really the right thing to do, but we can't really do much
else. At the very least, this makes the Intel driver happy.
There are probably other drivers that fail in this way during bootstrap.
Unfortunately, the only workaround for those is to avoid pre-loading
them and kldload them once the system is running instead.
attempt to clear its pending jobs list, as this could trigger another
signal, and cause an infinite recursion. What yppush_exit() tests
in order to determine whether to flush pending jobs is the
yppush_joblist chained list, so this is what needs to be cleared
in that case (not the yppush_jobs counter).

with EBUSY and a cdrom is not mounted at /cdrom, sysinstall fails to
treat it as an error and thinks that the disk mounted ok. However, it
doesn't find a cdrom.inf file so it complains. Later when it tries to
unmount the disk due to a mediaClose() umount(2) returns an error, and it
never clears its internal mounted flag. The fix here is to properly
handle EBUSY as an error if there isn't a CD already mounted at /cdrom.
- Add a new CDROMInitQuiet variable that can be used to shut up the dialog
box about the mount(2) system call failing when trying to mount a CD-ROM.
This is used by the feature described below.
- When using a fixit CD, first try to see if we can mount the disc in the
drive now and use it as a fixit CD. If not, then prompt the user to
insert the disc and try again. If we do succeed on the first "silent"
probe then we don't ask the user to eject the disk after leaving fixit
mode.
- Add a simple file existence test to make sure that the disc that we mount
really is a livefs disc.
- Explicitly switch back to ttyv0 when using the standard console after
the fixit shell dies. Previously this behavior worked accidentally
because all the fixit modes popped up a dialog box which contained a
hidden switch to ttyv0.

While version 4 entries are architecture-independent, we
also store old (version 3) entries in native byte order.
Also, the hash itself is created in a native byte order.
With this change, pwd_mkdb(8) can be used to cross-build
*pwd.db files for another architecture.
Tested on: i386, amd64, alpha, sparc64
with moderate IO going on, system usage can hover around 65-77% even
though it would benefit from higher performance. Typically, only truly
idle systems pass the 90% mark so only demote then.
Also, add conditional code to allow different invokations for objcopy
depending on whether we're compiled on an i386 arch or amd64 arch, so
that we can produce x86-64 object files on amd64.
Ville-Pertti Keinonen (will at exomi dot comohmygodnospampleasekthx)
deserves a big thanks for submitting initial patches to make it
work. I have mangled his contributions appropriately.
The main gotcha with Windows/x86-64 is that Microsoft uses a different
calling convention than everyone else. The standard ABI requires using
6 registers for argument passing, with other arguments on the stack.
Microsoft uses only 4 registers, and requires the caller to leave room
on the stack for the register arguments incase the callee needs to
spill them. Unlike x86, where Microsoft uses a mix of _cdecl, _stdcall
and _fastcall, all routines on Windows/x86-64 uses the same convention.
This unfortunately means that all the functions we export to the
driver require an intermediate translation wrapper. Similarly, we have
to wrap all calls back into the driver binary itself.
The original patches provided macros to wrap every single routine at
compile time, providing a secondary jump table with a customized
wrapper for each exported routine. I decided to use a different approach:
the call wrapper for each function is created from a template at
runtime, and the routine to jump to is patched into the wrapper as
it is created. The subr_pe module has been modified to patch in the
wrapped function instead of the original. (On x86, the wrapping
routine is a no-op.)
There are some minor API differences that had to be accounted for:
- KeAcquireSpinLock() is a real function on amd64, not a macro wrapper
around KfAcquireSpinLock()
- NdisFreeBuffer() is actually IoFreeMdl(). I had to change the whole
NDIS_BUFFER API a bit to accomodate this.
Bugs fixed along the way:
- IoAllocateMdl() always returned NULL
- kern_windrv.c:windrv_unload() wasn't releasing private driver object
extensions correctly (found thanks to memguard)
This has only been tested with the driver for the Broadcom 802.11g
chipset, which was the only Windows/x86-64 driver I could find.

Windows DRIVER_OBJECT and DEVICE_OBJECT mechanism so that we can
simulate driver stacking.
In Windows, each loaded driver image is attached to a DRIVER_OBJECT
structure. Windows uses the registry to match up a given vendor/device
ID combination with a corresponding DRIVER_OBJECT. When a driver image
is first loaded, its DriverEntry() routine is invoked, which sets up
the AddDevice() function pointer in the DRIVER_OBJECT and creates
a dispatch table (based on IRP major codes). When a Windows bus driver
detects a new device, it creates a Physical Device Object (PDO) for
it. This is a DEVICE_OBJECT structure, with semantics analagous to
that of a device_t in FreeBSD. The Windows PNP manager will invoke
the driver's AddDevice() function and pass it pointers to the DRIVER_OBJECT
and the PDO.
The AddDevice() function then creates a new DRIVER_OBJECT structure of
its own. This is known as the Functional Device Object (FDO) and
corresponds roughly to a private softc instance. The driver uses
IoAttachDeviceToDeviceStack() to add this device object to the
driver stack for this PDO. Subsequent drivers (called filter drivers
in Windows-speak) can be loaded which add themselves to the stack.
When someone issues an IRP to a device, it travel along the stack
passing through several possible filter drivers until it reaches
the functional driver (which actually knows how to talk to the hardware)
at which point it will be completed. This is how Windows achieves
driver layering.
Project Evil now simulates most of this. if_ndis now has a modevent
handler which will use MOD_LOAD and MOD_UNLOAD events to drive the
creation and destruction of DRIVER_OBJECTs. (The load event also
does the relocation/dynalinking of the image.) We don't have a registry,
so the DRIVER_OBJECTS are stored in a linked list for now. Eventually,
the list entry will contain the vendor/device ID list extracted from
the .INF file. When ndis_probe() is called and detectes a supported
device, it will create a PDO for the device instance and attach it
to the DRIVER_OBJECT just as in Windows. ndis_attach() will then call
our NdisAddDevice() handler to create the FDO. The NDIS miniport block
is now a device extension hung off the FDO, just as it is in Windows.
The miniport characteristics table is now an extension hung off the
DRIVER_OBJECT as well (the characteristics are the same for all devices
handled by a given driver, so they don't need to be per-instance.)
We also do an IoAttachDeviceToDeviceStack() to put the FDO on the
stack for the PDO. There are a couple of fake bus drivers created
for the PCI and pccard buses. Eventually, there will be one for USB,
which will actually accept USB IRP.s
Things should still work just as before, only now we do things in
the proper order and maintain the correct framework to support passing
IRPs between drivers.

accurately reflect reality
- update ndiscvt to make the drv_data symbol in ndis_driver_data.h a
global so that if_ndis_pci.o and/or if_ndis_pccard.o can see it.

for calculating the job number for a job based on the control-file name.
We might receive cf-files named by other implementations of lpr, where
the job number shown by lpq would not match the job number that other
commands expected for the same name.
This also uses a newer algorithm for determining a job number, to avoid
problems caused when a control-file is named using an IP address, instead
of the hostname.
This also moved the declaration if isowner() from lp.h to rmjob.c. When I
went to change the parameters, I noticed that rmjob.c was the only source
file which uses it.

control-file for each print job. This is partially because the previous
checks still let through some characters which would cause trouble for
other applications which try to process the resulting userid -- such as
accounting programs.
But the main reason is to handle the case where some remote host sends a
print job where the given userid is an uppercase-version of the real userid.
For that case, lpd will now check for uppercase letters in the userid. If
there are any, it will check to see if the given userid (with the uppercase
letters) is a valid one. If it is *not* valid, then lpd will change the
userid to all-lowercase right when the job is received.

disk. This is main reason why sysinstall presents SCSI CDROM to
available disks in Fdisk/Label menu. In addition, adding a blank
SCSI CDROM to the menu generates floating point exception in sparc64.
Disk_Names() just extracts sysctl "kern.disks". Why GEOM treats SCSI
CDROM as a disk is beyond me and that should be investigated.
For temporary workaround, ignore SCSI CDROM device.

Previously, it would recognize it as a valid shell only
if the basename (nologin) was specified. Now, it will
recognize both the basename and the full path.
NOTE: The full path as adduser(8) understands it is /usr/sbin/nologin.
There is a symlink, /sbin/nologin, but that's deprecated and
only there for backwards compatibility.

modules, since accessing the module metadata involves following
pointers between different ELF sections.
This allows kldxref to correctly build linker.hints on the amd64
platform.

It is practically impossible to install any useful package and not get
Perl automatically pulled in as a dependency. So the typical user will
get their Perl.
This change greatly reduces the amount of manual labor in building the
miniinst.iso in release building.
Centralize the fdctl_wr() function by adding the offset in
the resource to the softc structure.
Bugfix: Read the drive-change signal from the correct place:
same place as the ctl register.
Remove the cdevsw{} related code and implement a GEOM class.
Ditch the state-engine and park a thread on each controller
to service the queue.
Make the interrupt FAST & MPSAFE since it is just a simple
wakeup(9) call.
Rely on a per controller mutex to protect the bioqueues.
Grab GEOMs topology lock when we have to and Giant when
ISADMA needs it. Since all access to the hardware is
isolated in the per controller thread, the rest of the
driver is lock & Giant free.
Create a per-drive queue where requests are parked while
the motor spins up. When the motor is running the requests
are purged to the per controller queue. This allows
requests to other drives to be serviced during spin-up.
Only setup the motor-off timeout when we finish the last
request on the queue and cancel it when a new request
arrives. This fixes the bug in the old code where the motor
turned off while we were still retrying a request.
Make the "drive-change" work reliably. Probe the drive on
first opens. Probe with a recal and a seek to cyl=1 to
reset the drive change line and check again to see if we
have a media.
When we see the media disappear we destroy the geom provider,
create a new one, and flag that autodetection should happen
next time we see a media (unless a specific format is configured).
Add sysctl tunables for a lot of drive related parameters.
If you spend a lot of time waiting for floppies you can
grab the i82078 pdf from Intels web-page and try tuning
these.
Add sysctl debug.fdc.debugflags which will enable various
kinds of debugging printfs.
Add central definitions of our well known floppy formats.
Simplify datastructures for autoselection of format and
call the code at the right times.
Bugfix: Remove at least one piece of code which would have
made 2.88M floppies not work.

Do allow r/w opens of r/o media but refuse actual write

another process already has /dev/snp0 open, the snp(4) will return
EBUSY, in which case watch will try to open /dev/snp1..9. Currently
watch does not check errno to see if the failure was a result of EBUSY.
This results in watch making futile attempts to open snp0..snp9 even
though devices may not exist or the caller does not have permissions
to access the device.
In addition to this, it attempts to setup the screen for snooping even
though it may not ever get an snp device.
So this patch does two things
1) Checks errno for EBUSY, if open(2) fails for another reason
print that reason and exit.
2) setup the terminal for snooping after the snp descriptor has
been obtained.

install of Postfix fails since Postfix 1 is picked from INDEX instead
of Postfix 2.
The problem is that the package_add function matches multiple Postfix
packages and then installs a "random" version (the last one found in
INDEX). This does not occur with a CD-ROM install since there is only
one Postfix package on the CD-ROM.
The correct solution to this would be to check the origin field from
INDEX instead of the package name, but due to the way sysinstall is
made that is not trivial, so instead work around the problem by
hard-coding the Postfix major and minor revision (for the current
stable version) to install directly into the package_add call.

MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX in the environment. In any case this line kills the
original value of ${MAKE}. When during buildworld a new make is built (as
is the case during the upgrade) this causes a wrong make to be picked up
(the first one in the path). Use the same technique as Makefile.inc1:
create a MAKEENV variable and a CRUNCHMAKE that calls ${MAKE} with that
MAKEENV prefixed. Use CRUNCHMAKE instead of MAKE throughout the generated
makefile. This leaves the original ${MAKE} undisturbed.
some confusion as to how large the EFI system partition should be,
but 100MB seems to be either the maximum, the minimum or the default
size, so make the EFI partition 100MB.
global variables. On ia64, save a pointer to the efi chunk as well.
o At the same time, change checkLabels() to define these globals instead
of having the caller of checkLabels() pass addresses to variables for
these. Change the two callers correspondingly.
o Spent a bit more time adjusting try_auto_label() to prepate for having
the EFI partition created on ia64.
o Remove efi_mountpoint(). The EFI chunk is now available without having
to iterate over the disks and chunks to find it every time we need it.
o On ia64, now that the root chunk is globally available, set the
vfs.root.mountfrom tunable in loader.conf. This avoids that one cannot
boot into FreeBSD after an install. The kernel cannot find the root
device without a little help...

really wants to build non-cryptographic binaries, but the "crypto"
release distribution is now part of "base", and anyone installing from a
release will get cryptographic binaries.

o Remove the code that creates the boot directory on the EFI file
system after it has been mounted, as well as remove the code
that creates the symlink from /boot -> /efi/boot (*). As a result,
/boot will be extracted onto the root file system.
o Add a function efi_mountpoint() that returns the mount point of
the EFI file system or NULL if no EFI partition is created. This
function is used to both check whether there's an EFI file system
and to return what its mount point is.
o When there's no EFI file system, ask the user if this is what he
or she wants. Since we extract /boot onto the root file system,
we do not actually need an EFI file system for the installation to
work. Whether one wants to install without an EFI partition is
of course an entirely different question. We allow it...
o When we're done installing and need to fix up the various bits
and pieces, check if there's an EFI partition and if yes, move
/boot to /efi/boot and create a symlink /boot -> /efi/boot (*).
This is a much more reliable way to get /boot onto the EFI
partition than creating the symlink up front and hope its being
respected. It so happened that we never had the boot directory
end up on the EFI partition. We make the symlink relative.
(*) /efi is a place holder for the actual EFI mount point of course.

we'll actually create an EFI partition with a FAT file system instead
of an UFS file system. It also allows us to give a sensible default
mount point for EFI partitions so that people don't have to guess.
This also means that we can now remove new_efi_part(), which did the
same thing as new_part(), except it created a FAT file system. The
function wasn't called when the EFI partition was created from scratch
though, which was the problem. By passing the partition type to the
various functions, we can deal with EFI without having to duplicate
code.
While I'm here, document the existence of the '-l' option, which allows
one to use moused to use psm in some more interesting ways.

that actually need it. This makes it easier for a platform porter to
find the files that may need tweaking to support whatever MD specific
partitioning is needed. It also helps to prevent that the libdisk API
gets exposed and/or used where it's not needed.
some debug support turned on. It turns out the sections in this driver
binary had relative virtual addresses (RVAs) that were different
from the raw addresses, and it had a .data section where the virtual size
was much larger than the raw size. (Most production binaries produced
with the Microsoft DDK have RVA == PA.)
There's code in the ndiscvt(8) utility that's supposed to handle
the vsize != rsize case, but it turns out it was slightly broken,
and it failed to handle the RVA != RA case at all. Hopefully, this
commit will fix all that.
- Give ndiscvt(8) the ability to process a .SYS file directly into
a .o file so that we don't have to emit big messy char arrays into
the ndis_driver_data.h file. This behavior is currently optional, but
may become the default some day.
- Give ndiscvt(8) the ability to turn arbitrary files into .ko files
so that they can be pre-loaded or kldloaded. (Both this and the
previous change involve using objcopy(1)).
- Give NdisOpenFile() the ability to 'read' files out of kernel memory
that have been kldloaded or pre-loaded, and disallow the use of
the normal vn_open() file opening method during bootstrap (when no
filesystems have been mounted yet). Some people have reported that
kldloading if_ndis.ko works fine when the system is running multiuser
but causes a panic when the modile is pre-loaded by /boot/loader. This
happens with drivers that need to use NdisOpenFile() to access
external files (i.e. firmware images). NdisOpenFile() won't work
during kernel bootstrapping because no filesystems have been mounted.
To get around this, you can now do the following:
o Say you have a firmware file called firmware.img
o Do: ndiscvt -f firmware.img -- this creates firmware.img.ko
o Put the firmware.img.ko in /boot/kernel
o add firmware.img_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf
o add if_ndis_load="YES" and ndis_load="YES" as well
Now the loader will suck the additional file into memory as a .ko. The
phony .ko has two symbols in it: filename_start and filename_end, which
are generated by objcopy(1). ndis_open_file() will traverse each module
in the module list looking for these symbols and, if it finds them, it'll
use them to generate the file mapping address and length values that
the caller of NdisOpenFile() wants.
As a bonus, this will even work if the file has been statically linked
into the kernel itself, since the "kernel" module is searched too.
(ndiscvt(8) will generate both filename.o and filename.ko for you).
- Modify the mechanism used to provide make-pretend FASTCALL support.
Rather than using inline assembly to yank the first two arguments
out of %ecx and %edx, we now use the __regparm__(3) attribute (and
the __stdcall__ attribute) and use some macro magic to re-order
the arguments and provide dummy arguments as needed so that the
arguments passed in registers end up in the right place. Change
taken from DragonflyBSD version of the NDISulator.
It does survive « make release ».

custom releases over NFS where locking may be unreliable at best and

This could cause a segfault under -neworder if newsyslog had to rotate
multiple files, and later ones had specifed the 'N' flag.

files to rotate. The new order will first rotate all files that need
to be rotated, and then send a single signal to each process which
needs to be signaled, and finally it will compress all the files which
were rotated.
This means daemons will be signaled once per run of newsyslog, instead
of once per file rotated. Also, files will be compressed in order of
file-size (smallest to largest). Also, it waits for each file to be
completely compressed before starting the next one (effectively as if
the 'w' flag is specified for all entries in newsyslog.conf). This
avoids the situation of having 10 gzip's going at the same time (each
with a log.0 and a log.0.gz file active), and it also means that file
attributes can be reliably set on files after they are compressed.
NOTE: This commit does define NEWORDER (which you could get rid of if
you really don't trust this), but it does not flip the "-D neworder"
switch. So, at the moment none of these changes happen unless you
request them (perhaps by adding '<debug> neworder' in newsyslog.conf).

another one from the stack into conf_entry. Add a routine to change
file-attributes (chown, chmod, chflags), instead of having several

pointless, but they are the "insignificant parts" of a much larger
update that I'll be committing soon. Doing these as a separate update

Because raw sockets can be used to configure and interact
with various network subsystems, extra caution should be
used where privileged access to jails is given out to
untrusted parties. As such, by default this option is disabled.
A few others and I are currently auditing the kernel

privledged prison users is safe.

Syslogd should ensure that f_file is a valid file descriptor when
f_type is FILE, CONSOLE, TTY and for a PIPE where f_pid > 0. If the
descriptor is closed/invalid then the type should be set to UNUSED
or the pid should be set to 0.
To this end:
1) Don't close(f->f_file) if we can't send a message to a remote
host because the file descriptor used for remote logging is
stored in finet, not in f->f_file. f->f_file is probably
uninitialised, so I guess we usually end up closing fd 0.
2) Don't close PIPE file descriptors if they are invalid.
3) If the call to p_open fails, don't set the pid.
The OpenBSD patches in this area set f_file to -1 after the fd is
closed and then avoids calling close if f_file < 0. I haven't done
this, but it might be a good idea too.

stored in EEPROM or NVRAM. It's inspired by the NetBSD eeprom(8) and
the SunOS/Solaris eeprom(1M) utilities. Currently, this eeprom(8)
only supports systems equipped with Open Firmware and is only tested
on Sun machines but should work on any platform using Open Firmware.
A bit more specific, eeprom(8) can be used on these systems to do the
same under FreeBSD as can be done using the printenv and setenv
commandos in the boot monitor. One thing that only hardly can be done
using the boot monitor but easily with eeprom(8) is to write a logo
to the "oem-logo" property. eeprom(8) may also be useful to recover
the boot monitor password (in the default configuration only as root,
of course), i.e. when the boot monitor allows you to boot but you
can't alter the configuration because the password is unknown. The
man page may also be a useful reference of the various configuration
variables.
The idea of eeprom(8) is that handlers can be written to add support
for any firmware that stores such configuration in EEPROM or NVRAM;
sort of e.g. eeprom(1M) on Solaris/x86 is used to turn PAE-support
on and off (stored in a file then, not hardware). In FreeBSD, a
candidate for this would be a handler for the EFI boot environment
for FreeBSD/ia64.
eeprom(8) uses some code from NetBSD (eeprom.c and the base for
eeprom.8), the handler for the Open Firmware /options node
(ofw_options.[c,h]) was written using ofw_util.[c,h] from ofwdump(8).

- Don't look for partitions inside a FreeBSD chunk on ia64 when mounting
the filesystems just before the chroot and install.
- Write entries out to /etc/fstab for filesystems that aren't inside a

rarpd clobbered any AF_INET information already configured for a given
interface name, so interfaces with more than one IP address made rarpd
listen only for the last address out of all IP aliases.
I changed this, so that AF_LINK information is always collected first
(to ensure the interface name gets its link-layer address associated),
but while looking for AF_INET addresses, the configuration is cloned
if there has already been one IP address seen for that interface name.
Thus, rarpd now effectively listens on all subnets.

where time goes backwards (compared to the previous record) are skipped.
Also prints a message saying how many records were changed or skipped due
to these checks. Check was inspired by a simpler check in OpenBSD's version.
This is all meant to sidestep problems that Tillman Hodgson noticed with 'ac'
when running sparc64 with 64-bit time_t's. The real problem is whatever is
creating wtmp records with ut_time==0, of course, but I have not yet figured
out what is doing that.

if_ndis.c has been split into if_ndis_pci.c and if_ndis_pccard.c.
The ndiscvt(8) utility should be able to parse device info for PCMCIA
devices now. The ndis_alloc_amem() has moved from kern_ndis.c to
if_ndis_pccard.c so that kern_ndis.c no longer depends on pccard.
NOTE: this stuff is not guaranteed to work 100% correctly yet. So
far I have been able to load/init my PCMCIA Cisco Aironet 340 card,
but it crashes in the interrupt handler. The existing support for
PCI/cardbus devices should still work as before.

function pointers, but in the special case of (void *)0, agreement

Teach libipsec and setkey about the tcp-md5 class of security associations,
thus allowing administrators to add per-host keys to the SADB for use by
the tcpsignature_compute() function.

adds support to the SPD to specify flows for tcp-md5 treatment is suitable
for production.

loading on a particular version of Windows. For example, a .INF file
for a Windows 2000 driver may have an empty [foo.NT.5.1] section which
will be ingored on Win2K (whose .INF parser won't look for sections
decorated with .NT.5.1) in favor of a [foo] section. Likewise, a
WinXP file will have an empty [foo] section which will be ignored in
favor of [foo.NT.5.1].
The problem is, we can handle both Win2K and WinXP drivers, and we
don't want to exclude either one.
As a workaround, we try to pretend we are WinXP by default and search
for sections decorated with .NT.5.1, but if we don't turn up any records,
we assume that maybe we're being fooled by a sabotaged .INF file and
make one more pass looking for undecorated sections instead.
This allows us to parse the .INF files for both the Win2K and the WinXP
Centrino wireless drivers.
I'd give anything for 5 minutes alone in a room with whoever wrote
Microsoft's .INF file parser. Just 5 minutes. That's all.
for storing the "diff -n" output. Some files (eg ports/INDEX,v) are too
big nowadays to fit on the stack.

if the line doesn't match ^<%d>, then treat it as a regular kernel
printf line. Previously if a kernel printf message started with "<"
it would be interpreted as a log message, often with LOG_EMERG
level. This was triggered by some printfs in sys/dev/aic7xxx/, and
can also happen with the partial lines that result if syslogd cannot
keep up with the rate of arrival of kernel messages.

When an NFS server is port-scanned nfsd sometimes exits. This has
happened 3 times the last few weeks.
Nfsd has been written to exit when accept(2) fails. Unfortunately
accept can sometimes make a "normal" return with errno ECONNABORTED
and in this case nfsd exits prematurely.
Solution:
Check for ECONNABORTED (and also EINTR, since nfsd uses signals)
and continue.

Add a -n flag to ndiscvt to allow the user to override the default
device name of NDIS devices. Instead of "ndis0, ndis1, etc..."
you can have "foo0, foo1, etc..." This allows you to have more than
one kind of NDIS device in the kernel at the same time.
Convert from printf() to device_printf() in if_ndis.c, kern_ndis.c
and subr_ndis.c.
Create UMA zones for ndis_packet and ndis_buffer structs allocated
on transmit. The zones are created and destroyed in the modevent
handler in kern_ndis.c.

than a char array. Emitting the data as a big char array works fine in
the typical case, where a .sys file may be ~50K in size. Unfortunately,
some .sys files can be several hundred Kbytes in size, or even several
megabytes in size. One extreme case is the Intel centrino wireless
driver, which is 2.4MB. This causes us to emit an ndis_driver_data.h
file that's on the order of 15MB in size, and gcc consumes enormous
amounts of virtual memory while trying to compile it. On my laptop,
with 128MB of RAM and 256MB of swap space, gcc consumed all available
VM and crashed without being able to compile if_ndis.o.
By emitting the array as assembler, we bypass the C compiler and consume
much less memory. I was able to easily test compile if_ndis.ko with the
centrino driver on my laptop after this change.
This is merely a convenience, and should not have any operational effect
on the NDISulator itself.
definitions for more than one device (usually differentiated by
the PCI subvendor/subdevice ID). Each device also has its own tree
of registry keys. In some cases, each device has the same keys, but
sometimes each device has a unique tree but with overlap. Originally,
I just had ndiscvt(8) dump out all the keys it could find, and we
would try to apply them to every device we could find. Now, each key
has an index number that matches it to a device in the device ID list.
This lets us create just the keys that apply to a particular device.
I also added an extra field to the device list to hold the subvendor
and subdevice ID.
Some devices are generic, i.e. there is no subsystem definition. If
we have a device that doesn't match a specific subsystem value and
we have a generic entry, we use the generic entry.
mostly used on 80x25 displays, and the actual window is about ten
characters narrower than that, resulting in the need for horizontal
scrolling. No functional change.

needed to be statically populated with device nodes. The first two are no
longer true, which makes the third pretty moot. In fact, we don't seem to
put device node bits into the distribution archives at all anymore.
So..... remove the god-aweful nasty hack that force unmounted devfs during
installation so that static device nodes could land in /dev. Now that the
vnode cleaner handles this case better this isn't strictly needed, but
axeing code in sysinstall is almost always benficial. Thanks to Don Lewis
for pointing out this attribute of sysinstall.
the case where there's an entry in the manufacturer's device list but
no corresponding installation section (and hence no AddReg assignments),
i.e. if dev = find_assign(sname, "AddReg"); returns NULL, then
don't try to dereference dev.
There is a fundamental problem with the handling of .INF files that
contain definitions for multiple devices: right now we dump all the
AddReg sections that we find, but don't distinguish what device they
belong to. This often results in duplicate keys.

This is a special compatibility module for allowing Windows NDIS
miniport network drivers to be used with FreeBSD/x86. This provides
_binary_ NDIS compatibility (not source): you can run NDIS driver
code, but you can't build it. There are three main parts:
sys/compat/ndis: the NDIS compat API, which provides binary
compatibility functions for many routines in NDIS.SYS, HAL.dll
and ntoskrnl.exe in Windows (these are the three modules that
most NDIS miniport drivers use). The compat module also contains
a small PE relocator/dynalinker which relocates the Windows .SYS
image and then patches in our native routines.
sys/dev/if_ndis: the if_ndis driver wrapper. This module makes
use of the ndis compat API and can be compiled with a specially
prepared binary image file (ndis_driver_data.h) containing the
Windows .SYS image and registry key information parsed out of the
accompanying .INF file. Once if_ndis.ko is built, it can be loaded
and unloaded just like a native FreeBSD kenrel module.
usr.sbin/ndiscvt: a special utility that converts foo.sys and foo.inf
into an ndis_driver_data.h file that can be compiled into if_ndis.o.
Contains an .inf file parser graciously provided by Matt Dodd (and
mercilessly hacked upon by me) that strips out device ID info and
registry key info from a .INF file and packages it up with a binary
image array. The ndiscvt(8) utility also does some manipulation of
the segments within the .sys file to make life easier for the kernel
loader. (Doing the manipulation here saves the kernel code from having
to move things around later, which would waste memory.)
ndiscvt is only built for the i386 arch. Only files.i386 has been
updated, and none of this is turned on in GENERIC. It should probably
work on pc98. I have no idea about amd64 or ia64 at this point.
This is still a work in progress. I estimate it's about %85 done, but
I want it under CVS control so I can track subsequent changes. It has
been tested with exactly three drivers: the LinkSys LNE100TX v4 driver
(Lne100v4.sys), the sample Intel 82559 driver from the Windows DDK
(e100bex.sys) and the Broadcom BCM43xx wireless driver (bcmwl5.sys). It
still needs to have a net80211 stuff added to it. To use it, you would
do something like this:

All registry keys are mapped to sysctl nodes. Sometimes drivers refer
to registry keys that aren't mentioned in foo.inf. If this happens,
the NDIS API module creates sysctl nodes for these keys on the fly so
you can tweak them.
An example usage of the Broadcom wireless driver would be:

(1) Don't modify the configuration of the NFS server as a result of
selecting a profile. We already explicitly prompt for the NFS
server configuration during install, and the user may not get
much advance notice that we're turning it off again. Instead,
use profiles (for better or for worse) only for security tuning.
(2) Don't modify the sendmail setting as part of the security profile:
use the default from /etc/defaults/rc.conf rather than explicitly
specifying. Note that the default in /etc/defaults/rc.conf is
more conservative than the explicit rc.conf entry added by
sysinstall during install, as it does not permit SMTP delivery.
(3) Update "congratulations on your profile" text to reflect these
changes.
Note that security profiles now affect only the securelevel and sshd
settings. My leaning would be to make sshd an explicit configuration
option, move securelevels to the security menu, and drop security
profiles entirely. However, that requires more plumbing of sendmail
than I'm currently willing to invest.
We may want to add a "permit SMTP delivery" question to the install
process.
Skinny is the protocol used by Cisco IP phones to talk to Cisco Call
Managers. With this code, one can use a Cisco IP phone behind a FreeBSD
NAT gateway.
Currently, having the Call Manager behind the NAT gateway is not supported.

The BCM4401 is built into several x86 laptop and desktop systems. For the
moment, I have only enabled it in the x86 kernel config because although
it's a PCI device, I haven't heard of any standalone NICs that use it. If
somebody knows of one, we can easily add it to the other arches.
This driver uses register/structure data gleaned from the Linux
driver released by Broadcom, but does not contain any of the code
from the Linux driver itself. It uses busdma.
Update FADT for new fields including pm_profile, pstate_cnt, and cst_cnt.
Add acpi_print_gas() for printing various address formats.
Print FACS contents.
Remove unused code.
debugging options. Initial option is '-D TN=<time>', which can be
used to see how newsyslog would work if run at the specified time.
(time format is ISO 8601, since that is already supported).

rl(4) driver and put it in a new re(4) driver. The re(4) driver shares
the if_rlreg.h file with rl(4) but is a separate module. (Ultimately
I may change this. For now, it's convenient.)
rl(4) has been modified so that it will never attach to an 8139C+
chip, leaving it to re(4) instead. Only re(4) has the PCI IDs to
match the 8169/8169S/8110S gigE chips. if_re.c contains the same
basic code that was originally bolted onto if_rl.c, with the
following updates:
- Added support for jumbo frames. Currently, there seems to be
a limit of approximately 6200 bytes for jumbo frames on transmit.
(This was determined via experimentation.) The 8169S/8110S chips
apparently are limited to 7.5K frames on transmit. This may require
some more work, though the framework to handle jumbo frames on RX
is in place: the re_rxeof() routine will gather up frames than span
multiple 2K clusters into a single mbuf list.
- Fixed bug in re_txeof(): if we reap some of the TX buffers,
but there are still some pending, re-arm the timer before exiting
re_txeof() so that another timeout interrupt will be generated, just
in case re_start() doesn't do it for us.
- Handle the 'link state changed' interrupt
- Fix a detach bug. If re(4) is loaded as a module, and you do
tcpdump -i re0, then you do 'kldunload if_re,' the system will
panic after a few seconds. This happens because ether_ifdetach()
ends up calling the BPF detach code, which notices the interface
is in promiscuous mode and tries to switch promisc mode off while
detaching the BPF listner. This ultimately results in a call
to re_ioctl() (due to SIOCSIFFLAGS), which in turn calls re_init()
to handle the IFF_PROMISC flag change. Unfortunately, calling re_init()
here turns the chip back on and restarts the 1-second timeout loop
that drives re_tick(). By the time the timeout fires, if_re.ko
has been unloaded, which results in a call to invalid code and
blows up the system.
To fix this, I cleared the IFF_UP flag before calling ether_ifdetach(),
which stops the ioctl routine from trying to reset the chip.
- Modified comments in re_rxeof() relating to the difference in
RX descriptor status bit layout between the 8139C+ and the gigE
chips. The layout is different because the frame length field
was expanded from 12 bits to 13, and they got rid of one of the
status bits to make room.
- Add diagnostic code (re_diag()) to test for the case where a user
has installed a broken 32-bit 8169 PCI NIC in a 64-bit slot. Some
NICs have the REQ64# and ACK64# lines connected even though the
board is 32-bit only (in this case, they should be pulled high).
This fools the chip into doing 64-bit DMA transfers even though
there is no 64-bit data path. To detect this, re_diag() puts the
chip into digital loopback mode and sets the receiver to promiscuous
mode, then initiates a single 64-byte packet transmission. The
frame is echoed back to the host, and if the frame contents are
intact, we know DMA is working correctly, otherwise we complain
loudly on the console and abort the device attach. (At the moment,
I don't know of any way to work around the problem other than
physically modifying the board, so until/unless I can think of a
software workaround, this will have do to.)

- Modified rlphy.c to allow re(4) to attach as well as rl(4).
Note that this code works for the sample 8169/Marvell 88E1000 NIC
that I have, but probably won't work for the 8169S/8110S chips.
RealTek has sent me some sample NICs, but they haven't arrived yet.
I will probably need to add an rlgphy driver to handle the on-board
PHY in the 8169S/8110S (it needs special DSP initialization).
when reading/writing spool files. I intend to do a more elaborate
version, but I want to get this much in before 4.9-release. As written,
this results in no change to the object code.

- Make mpi-350 cards sort-of work with new firmware. It RXs okay but TXs
only work for about 14 packets then fails to get an interrupt. The
TX watchdog fires. It has been reported that my hack for now doesn't
break cards with the older firmware. It appears my card has lost
the ability to RX or TX at all but other peoples cards work. I assume
it got damaged in tansport.

was mistakenly calling the standard isnumber() function to find out if
the given 'user' or 'group' were all numeric. This meant that only the
first character of the fields were actually checked, so a username of
(say) '3com' would look like a number, and thus get mapped to uid=3 (bin)
instead of username=3com.
This bug was introduced back in freebsd's v1.1. That initial import
almost matches netbsd's v1.9, except that an internal isnumber()
routine was removed in favor of the standard library version. The thing
is, that internal routine was checking the entire string, and not just
the first digit. In OpenBSD, isnumber() was eventually renamed to
isnumberstr() to make the distinction more obvious, and I'm going to
follow that lead.
I believe this also happens to remove the last references to isnumber()
in the entire freebsd base system.

What is the HPET I hear you ask? It is the High Precision Event Timer
that is supposed to supplement and eventually replace the 8254 timer and
the RTC periodic interrupts. Among other things, it is 64 bit (can be
run in 32 bit mode for 32 bit cpus), and is suitable as a replacement for
the ACPI timer on SMP systems (the specs are much better) and as a
replacement for the ITC based synthetic clock for on ia64 systems.
It seems IA64 and AMD64 systems tend to have this. It is likely to start
showing up in i386 systems if it isn't already on some of them.

become a kernel only include file.
incoming remote telephone numbers and subaddresses ignored the configured
list completely since it was always terminated by a break at the end of

zeroes. 0.01 ms does not mean the same thing as 0.010 ms. Although they

This simply includes <sys/cdefs.h> when that is appropriate,
and then checks for any cdefs-ish macros that lpr uses, and
defines them if they don't already exist. This is only a start
at making freebsd's lpr less of a hassle to port. It is mainly
added so all of lpr can be changed to use the __FBSDID() macro,
without making it *more* of a hassle to build on other OS's.

I am the maintainer of CTM. There is a problem that when very large deltas
are created, that the program ctm_smail, which is responsible for mailing
the deltas out, will instead create a single message that says the delta
is too large. However, if the -q option is set, instead of placing this
message in the queue (as it would have done with the deltas), it mails it
out directly. This conflicts with the current working of CTM in that the
email address is set as %%REPLACE-ME%% so that the created mailing pieces
can be signed by gnu-pgp, and then have the mailing address changed.
This fix means that if the -q option is set, and the delta is too large,
the "too large" message is placed in the queue.
Also, I made the "too large" message a little more up to date.

- Use getifaddrs() instead of rolling our own buggy one. Previously,
rarpd(8) would fail to see some interfaces because of a hardcoded limit.
It now successfully sees any interface in the system, and this also makes
the code _much_ simpler.
- Replace strncpy() calls with strlcpy() calls. Some uses of strncpy()
were bogus ; the code wasn't ensuring that the string was NUL terminated.
- Don't try to guard about select() FD_* macros being undefined.
- Use IF_NAMESIZE and ETHER_ADDR_LEN macros where appropriate.
- Add static keywords to function definitions for consistency, since
the prototypes have it (I wonder why GCC didn't complain about this).
- Remove compat code for very old BSD versions and SunOS.
- Remove code for systems not having the dirent.h header.
- The code is now WARNS=5 clean so mark it as such.
- Don't add -DTFTP_DIR="/tftpboot" to the build command line since it's
the default.

This commit has two pieces. One half is the watchdog kernel code which lives
primarily in hardclock() in sys/kern/kern_clock.c. The other half is a userland
daemon which, when run, will keep the watchdog from firing while the userland
is intact and functioning.

its going to use fdisk+disklabel. The ia64 case is mostly academic though
because you'd be creating two partitions (dos + freebsd) rather than
a single freebsd-only partition.

installed, one gets both +COMMENT and +DESCR files with a trailing
'\n' character. However, +COMMENT does not contain a trailing '\n'
when it is installed from a package due to this behavior of pkg_create.
Therefore, make sure it behaves exactly the same regardless of
where got its information; either command line or files. The modified
functions are used by pkg_create.

has requested the lock in a non-blocking form, instead returning an
immediate failure. This appears to help reduce one of my "locks get
lost" symptoms involving lockf(1), which attempts a non-blocking lock
attempt before actually blocking on the lock. At this point the client
still gets back EACCES, which is an issue we're still working.

client, immediately notify the waiting process that the lock has been
granted via a wakeup. Without this change, the client rpc.lockd will
not wakeup the waiting process until it next re-polls the lock (sometime
in the next ten seconds), which can lead to marked latency across all
potential lockers, as the lock is held by the client for the duration.

1. Hostnames were not treated case insensitively in all cases.
2. The method for stripping hostnames when reading the syslog.conf
differed from that when finding the hostname of an incoming request.
This lead to a broken match check. In my case, it meant I had to
have '@scooter.smi.example.com.example.com' to have 'logger.example.com'
properly save messages from 'scooter.smi.sendmail.com'.
3. Add paranoia to cfline() such that it doesn't try to access memory
outside of the bounds of the f_host string.
4. While I am here, get rid of an outdated comment, argv[{0,1,2}] are now
checked for NULL after the strdup() calls.

PC98 boot blocks don't support UFS2. We keep newfs(8) defaulting to
UFS2.
Warn users that FreeBSD can only boot from a root file system smaller
than 1.5TB; hopefully this will get fixed by the patches currently
floating around on -CURRENT.

USB200M adapter. I know for a fact that there are other devices out
there with this chip but don't have all the USB vendor/device IDs.
Note: I'm not sure if this will force the driver to end up in the
install kernel image or not. Special magic needs to be done to exclude
it to keep the boot floppies from bloating again, someone please

FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE and later:
- newfs(8) will now create UFS2 file systems unless UFS1 is specifically
requested (-O1). To do this, I just twiddled the Oflag default.
- sysinstall(8) will now select UFS2 as the default layout for new
file systems unless specifically requested (use '1' and '2' to change
the file system layout in the disk labeler). To do this, I inverted
the ufs2 flag into a ufs1 flag, since ufs2 is now the default and
ufs1 is the edge case. There's a slight semantic change in the
key behavior: '2' no longer toggles, it changes the selection to UFS2.
This is very similar to a patch David O'Brien sent me at one point, and
that I couldn't find.
