discussion (including making def_arg allow reserved words), add missed
opt_definition for UNIQUE case. Put the reloptions support code in a less
random place (I chose to make a new file access/common/reloptions.c).
Eliminate header inclusion creep. Make the index options functions safely
user-callable (seems like client apps might like to be able to test validity
of options before trying to make an index). Reduce overhead for normal case
with no options by allowing rd_options to be NULL. Fix some unmaintainably
klugy code, including getting rid of Natts_pg_class_fixed at long last.
Some stylistic cleanup too, and pay attention to keeping comments in sync
with code.
Documentation still needs work, though I did fix the omissions in
catalogs.sgml and indexam.sgml.
will be expanded to a list of their member fields, rather than creating
a nested rowtype field as formerly. (The old behavior is still available
by omitting '.*'.) This syntax is not allowed by the SQL spec AFAICS,
so changing its behavior doesn't violate the spec. The new behavior is
substantially more useful since it allows, for example, triggers to check
for data changes with 'if row(new.*) is distinct from row(old.*)'. Per
my recent proposal.
JOIN, which I removed in a recent fit of over-optimism that we wouldn't
have any future use for it. Now it's needed to support disambiguating
WITH CHECK OPTION from WITH TIME ZONE. As proof of concept, add stub
grammar productions for WITH CHECK OPTION.
parser will allow "\'" to be used to represent a literal quote mark. The
"\'" representation has been deprecated for some time in favor of the
SQL-standard representation "''" (two single quote marks), but it has been
used often enough that just disallowing it immediately won't do. Hence
backslash_quote allows the settings "on", "off", and "safe_encoding",
the last meaning to allow "\'" only if client_encoding is a valid server
encoding. That is now the default, and the reason is that in encodings
such as SJIS that allow 0x5c (ASCII backslash) to be the last byte of a
multibyte character, accepting "\'" allows SQL-injection attacks as per
CVE-2006-2314 (further details will be published after release). The
"on" setting is available for backward compatibility, but it must not be
used with clients that are exposed to untrusted input.

throw warnings for 100%-SQL-standard constructs, clean up some minor
infelicities, try to un-break ecpg to the best of my ability. (It's not clear
how ecpg is going to find out the setting of standard_conforming_strings,
though.) I think pg_dump still needs work, too.
support both FOR UPDATE and FOR SHARE in one command, as well as both
NOWAIT and normal WAIT behavior. The more general code is actually
simpler and cleaner.
CREATE AGGREGATE aggname (input_type) (parameter_list)
along with the old syntax where the input type was named in the parameter
list. This fits more naturally with the way that the aggregate is identified
in DROP AGGREGATE and other utility commands; furthermore it has a natural
extension to handle multiple-input aggregates, where the basetype-parameter
method would get ugly. In fact, this commit fixes the grammar and all the
utility commands to support multiple-input aggregates; but DefineAggregate
rejects it because the executor isn't fixed yet.
I didn't do anything about treating agg(*) as a zero-input aggregate instead
of artificially making it a one-input aggregate, but that should be considered
in combination with supporting multi-input aggregates.
that apply the necessary domain constraint checks immediately. This fixes
cases where domain constraints went unchecked for statement parameters,
PL function local variables and results, etc. We can also eliminate existing
special cases for domains in places that had gotten it right, eg COPY.
Also, allow domains over domains (base of a domain is another domain type).
This almost worked before, but was disallowed because the original patch
hadn't gotten it quite right.

This is per my earlier proposal. This commit includes all the basic
infrastructure, but locations are only tracked and reported for errors
involving column references, function calls, and operators. More could
be done later but this seems like a good set to start with. I've also
moved the ReportSyntaxErrorPosition logic out of psql and into libpq,
which should make it available to more people --- even within psql this
is an improvement because warnings weren't handled by ReportSyntaxErrorPosition.
not likely ever to be implemented seeing it's been removed from SQL2003.
This allows getting rid of the 'filter' version of yylex() that we had in
parser.c, which should save at least a few microseconds in parsing.
(previously we only did = and <> correctly). Also, allow row comparisons
with any operators that are in btree opclasses, not only those with these
specific names. This gets rid of a whole lot of indefensible assumptions
about the behavior of particular operators based on their names ... though
it's still true that IN and NOT IN expand to "= ANY". The patch adds a
RowCompareExpr expression node type, and makes some changes in the
representation of ANY/ALL/ROWCOMPARE SubLinks so that they can share code
with RowCompareExpr.
I have not yet done anything about making RowCompareExpr an indexable
operator, but will look at that soon.

This seems to eliminate the parse-time bottleneck for deeply nested
JOIN structures that was exhibited by phil@vodafone.
RTE of interest, rather than the whole rangetable list. This makes
the API more understandable and avoids duplicate RTE lookups. This
patch reverts no-longer-needed portions of my patch of 2004-08-19.
performance problem pointed out by phil@vodafone: to wit, we were
spending O(N^2) time to check dropped-ness in an N-deep join tree,
even in the case where the tree was freshly constructed and couldn't
possibly mention any dropped columns. Instead of recursing in
get_rte_attribute_is_dropped(), change the data structure definition:
the joinaliasvars list of a JOIN RTE must have a NULL Const instead
of a Var at any position that references a now-dropped column. This
costs nothing during normal parse-rewrite-plan path, and instead we
have a linear-time update to make when loading a stored rule that
might contain now-dropped columns. While at it, move the responsibility
for acquring locks on relations referenced by rules into this separate
function (which I therefore chose to call AcquireRewriteLocks).
This saves effort --- namely, duplicated lock grabs in parser and rewriter
--- in the normal path at a cost of one extra non-locked heap_open()
in the stored-rule path; seems a good tradeoff. A fringe benefit is
that it is now *much* clearer that we acquire lock on relations referenced
in rules before we make any rewriter decisions based on their properties.
(I don't know of any bug of that ilk, but it wasn't exactly clear before.)
were pretty expensive and I believe the case they were put in to
defend against can no longer arise, now that we have dependency checks
to prevent deletion of a type entry that is still referenced. Certainly
the example given in the CVS log entry can't happen anymore.
Since this was the only use of typeidIsValid(), remove the routine too.
to eliminate unnecessary deadlocks. This commit adds SELECT ... FOR SHARE
paralleling SELECT ... FOR UPDATE. The implementation uses a new SLRU
data structure (managed much like pg_subtrans) to represent multiple-
transaction-ID sets. When more than one transaction is holding a shared
lock on a particular row, we create a MultiXactId representing that set
of transactions and store its ID in the row's XMAX. This scheme allows
an effectively unlimited number of row locks, just as we did before,
while not costing any extra overhead except when a shared lock actually
has to be shared. Still TODO: use the regular lock manager to control
the grant order when multiple backends are waiting for a row lock.

This actually saves code rather than adding it for most of the existing
callers, which had the rel open already. The main point though is to be
able to use this rather than plain addRangeTableEntry in setTargetTable,
thus saving one relation_openrv/relation_close cycle for every INSERT,
UPDATE, or DELETE. Seems to provide a several percent win on simple
INSERTs.
Also performed an initial run through of upgrading our Copyright date to
extend to 2005 ... first run here was very simple ... change everything
where: grep 1996-2004 && the word 'Copyright' ... scanned through the
generated list with 'less' first, and after, to make sure that I only
picked up the right entries ...
type-and-length coercion function, make sure that the coercion function
is told the correct typmod. Fixes Kris Jurka's example of a domain
over bit(N).
presence of dropped columns. Document the already-presumed fact that
eref aliases in relation RTEs are supposed to have entries for dropped
columns; cause the user alias structs to have such entries too, so that
there's always a one-to-one mapping to the underlying physical attnums.
Adjust expandRTE() and related code to handle the case where a column
that is part of a JOIN has been dropped. Generalize expandRTE()'s API
so that it can be used in a couple of places that formerly rolled their
own implementation of the same logic. Fix ruleutils.c to suppress
display of aliases for columns that were dropped since the rule was made.
to the physical layout of the rowtype, ie, there are dummy arguments
corresponding to any dropped columns in the rowtype. We formerly had a
couple of places that did it this way and several others that did not.
Fixes Gaetano Mendola's "cache lookup failed for type 0" bug of 5-Aug.
eliminating the former hard-wired convention about their names. Allow
pg_cast entries to represent both type coercion and length coercion in
a single step --- this is represented by a function that takes an
extra typmod argument, just like a length coercion function. This
nicely merges the type and length coercion mechanisms into something
at least a little cleaner than we had before. Make use of the single-
coercion-step behavior to fix integer-to-bit coercion so that coercing
to bit(n) yields the rightmost n bits of the integer instead of the
leftmost n bits. This should fix recurrent complaints about the odd
behavior of this coercion. Clean up the documentation of the bit string
functions, and try to put it where people might actually find it.
Also, get rid of the unreliable heuristics in ruleutils.c about whether
to display nested coercion steps; instead require parse_coerce.c to
label them properly in the first place.
sequences, as per recent discussion. All these names are now of the
form table_column_type, with digits added if needed to make them unique.
Default constraint names are chosen to be unique across their whole schema,
not just within the parent object, so as to be more SQL-spec-compatible
and make the information schema views more useful.
As a side effect, cause subscripts in INSERT targetlists to do something
more or less sensible; previously we evaluated such subscripts and then
effectively ignored them. Another side effect is that UPDATE-ing an
element or slice of an array value that is NULL now produces a non-null
result, namely an array containing just the assigned-to positions.
In the past, we used a 'Lispy' linked list implementation: a "list" was
merely a pointer to the head node of the list. The problem with that
design is that it makes lappend() and length() linear time. This patch
fixes that problem (and others) by maintaining a count of the list
length and a pointer to the tail node along with each head node pointer.
A "list" is now a pointer to a structure containing some meta-data
about the list; the head and tail pointers in that structure refer
to ListCell structures that maintain the actual linked list of nodes.
The function names of the list API have also been changed to, I hope,
be more logically consistent. By default, the old function names are
still available; they will be disabled-by-default once the rest of
the tree has been updated to use the new API names.
* ALTER ... ADD COLUMN with defaults and NOT NULL constraints works per SQL
spec. A default is implemented by rewriting the table with the new value
stored in each row.
* ALTER COLUMN TYPE. You can change a column's datatype to anything you
want, so long as you can specify how to convert the old value. Rewrites
the table. (Possible future improvement: optimize no-op conversions such
as varchar(N) to varchar(N+1).)
* Multiple ALTER actions in a single ALTER TABLE command. You can perform
any number of column additions, type changes, and constraint additions with
only one pass over the table contents.
Basic documentation provided in ALTER TABLE ref page, but some more docs
work is needed.

entry to identify what permissions it wants checked, store a full AclMode
mask in each RTE, and check exactly those bits. This allows an RTE
specifying, say, INSERT privilege on a view to be copied into a derived

leaks in array indexing support. The parser's equality_oper and ordering_oper
routines also use the cache. Change the operator search algorithms to look
for appropriate btree or hash index opclasses, instead of assuming operators
named '<' or '=' have the right semantics. (ORDER BY ASC/DESC now also look
at opclasses, instead of assuming '<' and '>' are the right things.) Add
several more index opclasses so that there is no regression in functionality
for base datatypes. initdb forced due to catalog additions.

common routine get_tle_by_resno() to search a tlist for a particular

It also works to create a non-polymorphic aggregate from polymorphic

lefthand scalar and each element of the array. The operator must
yield boolean; the result of the construct is the OR or AND of the
per-element results, respectively.

Clean up resolution of ambiguous operators/functions to avoid surprising
choices for domains: domains are treated as equivalent to their base types
and binary-coercibility is no longer considered a preference item when
choosing among multiple operators/functions. IsBinaryCoercible now correctly
reflects the notion that you need *only* relabel the type to get from type
A to type B: that is, a domain is binary-coercible to its base type, but
not vice versa. Various marginal cleanup, including merging the essentially
duplicate resolution code in parse_func.c and parse_oper.c. Improve opr_sanity
regression test to understand about binary compatibility (using pg_cast),
and fix a couple of small errors in the catalogs revealed thereby.
Restructure "special operator" handling to fetch operators via index opclasses
rather than hardwiring assumptions about names (cleans up the pattern_ops
stuff a little).

reference. Along the way, get rid of reskey/reskeyop fields in Resdoms.
Turns out that representation was not convenient for either the planner
or the executor; we can make the planner deliver exactly what the

Remove the ancient hack of storing the input Param-types array as a
global variable, and put the info into ParseState instead. This touches

it's really not a large patch. Note: PREPARE statement still insists on
exact specification of parameter types, but that could easily be relaxed
now, if we wanted to do so.
I had inadvertently omitted it while rearranging things to support
length-counted incoming messages. Also, change the parser's API back
to accepting a 'char *' query string instead of 'StringInfo', as the
latter wasn't buying us anything except overhead. (I think when I put
it in I had some notion of making the parser API 8-bit-clean, but
seeing that flex depends on null-terminated input, that's not really
ever gonna happen.)

But the old implementation refused to push down *any* quals if the

step towards someday supporting 8-byte OIDs. For the moment, it doesn't
do much except get rid of a lot of unsightly casts.

that used to do it in planner. That was an ancient kluge that was
never satisfactory; errors should be detected at parse time when possible.
But at the time we didn't have the support mechanism (expression_tree_walker
et al) to make it convenient to do in the parser.
make VALUE a non-reserved word again, use less invasive method of passing
ConstraintTestValue into transformExpr, fix problems with nested constraint
testing, do correct thing with NULL result from a constraint expression,
remove memory leak. Domain checks still need much more work if we are going
to allow ALTER DOMAIN, however.
operations: make sure we use operators that are compatible, as determined
by a mergejoin link in pg_operator. Also, add code to planner to ensure
we don't try to use hashed grouping when the grouping operators aren't
marked hashable.
coercions, not implicit ones. For example, 'select abstime(1035497293)'
should succeed because there is an explicit binary coercion from int4
to abstime.
to be flexible about assignment casts without introducing ambiguity in
operator/function resolution. Introduce a well-defined promotion hierarchy
for numeric datatypes (int2->int4->int8->numeric->float4->float8).
Change make_const to initially label numeric literals as int4, int8, or
numeric (never float8 anymore).
Explicitly mark Func and RelabelType nodes to indicate whether they came
from a function call, explicit cast, or implicit cast; use this to do
reverse-listing more accurately and without so many heuristics.
Explicit casts to char, varchar, bit, varbit will truncate or pad without
raising an error (the pre-7.2 behavior), while assigning to a column without
any explicit cast will still raise an error for wrong-length data like 7.3.
This more nearly follows the SQL spec than 7.2 behavior (we should be
reporting a 'completion condition' in the explicit-cast cases, but we have
no mechanism for that, so just do silent truncation).
Fix some problems with enforcement of typmod for array elements;
it didn't work at all in 'UPDATE ... SET array[n] = foo', for example.
Provide a generalized array_length_coerce() function to replace the
specialized per-array-type functions that used to be needed (and were
missing for NUMERIC as well as all the datetime types).
Add missing conversions int8<->float4, text<->numeric, oid<->int8.

type for runtime constraint checks, instead of misusing the parse-time
Constraint node for the purpose. Fix some damage introduced into type
coercion logic; in particular ensure that a coerced expression tree will
read out the correct result type when inspected (patch had broken some
RelabelType cases). Enforce domain NOT NULL constraints against columns
that are omitted from an INSERT.
with OPAQUE, as per recent pghackers discussion. I still want to do some
more work on the 'cstring' pseudo-type, but I'm going to commit the bulk
of the changes now before the tree starts shifting under me ...
to behave according to SQL92 (or according to my current understanding
of same, anyway). Per pghackers discussion way back in March 2002:

of functions returning domain types, update documentation for typtype,
move get_typtype to lsyscache.c (actually, resurrect the old version),
add defense against creating pseudo-typed table columns, fix some
bogus list-parsing in grammar. Issues remain with respect to alias
handling and type checking; Joe is on those.
types for Table Functions, as previously proposed on HACKERS. Here is a
brief explanation:
1. Creates a new pg_type typtype: 'p' for pseudo type (currently either
'b' for base or 'c' for catalog, i.e. a class).
2. Creates new builtin type of typtype='p' named RECORD. This is the
first of potentially several pseudo types.
3. Modify FROM clause grammer to accept:
SELECT * FROM my_func() AS m(colname1 type1, colname2 type1, ...)
where m is the table alias, colname1, etc are the column names, and
type1, etc are the column types.
4. When typtype == 'p' and the function return type is RECORD, a list
of column defs is required, and when typtype != 'p', it is
disallowed.
5. A check was added to ensure that the tupdesc provide via the parser
and the actual return tupdesc match in number and type of
attributes.
When creating a function you can do:
CREATE FUNCTION foo(text) RETURNS setof RECORD ...
When using it you can do:

Included in the patches are adjustments to the regression test sql and
expected files, and documentation.

This potentially solves (or at least improves) the issue of builtin
Table Functions. They can be bootstrapped as returning RECORD, and
we can wrap system views around them with properly specified column
defs. For example:

pg_settings, and have pg_settings act like a virtual table, allowing
settings to be queried and set.

returns-set boolean field in Func and Oper nodes. This allows cleaner,
more reliable tests for expressions returning sets in the planner and
parser. For example, a WHERE clause returning a set is now detected
and complained of in the parser, not only at runtime.

doesn't need to cope with tracking changes in so many files ...

user-schema type names that happen to coincide with system type names.
Per pghackers discussion 24-Apr. To avoid bloating the keyword list
too much, I removed the translations for datetime, timespan, and lztext,
all of which were slated for destruction several versions back anyway.
in gram.y can make use of the keywords.c string table, instead of having
their own copies of the keyword strings. This saves a few kilobytes and
more importantly eliminates an opportunity for cut-and-paste errors.
lists to join RTEs, attach a list of Vars and COALESCE expressions that will
replace the join's alias variables during planning. This simplifies
flatten_join_alias_vars while still making it easy to fix up varno references
when transforming the query tree. Add regression test cases for interactions
of subqueries with outer joins.
different privilege bits (might as well make use of the space we were
wasting on padding). EXECUTE and USAGE bits for procedures, languages
now are separate privileges instead of being overlaid on SELECT. Add
privileges for namespaces and databases. The GRANT and REVOKE commands
work for these object types, but we don't actually enforce the privileges
yet...
Use flex flags -CF. Pass the to-be-scanned string around as StringInfo
type, to avoid querying the length repeatedly. Clean up some code and
remove lex-compatibility cruft. Escape backslash sequences inline. Use
flex-provided yy_scan_buffer() function to set up input, rather than using
myinput().
qualified operator names directly, for example CREATE OPERATOR myschema.+
( ... ). To qualify an operator name in an expression you need to write
OPERATOR(myschema.+) (thanks to Peter for suggesting an escape hatch).
I also took advantage of having to reformat pg_operator to fix something
that'd been bugging me for a while: mergejoinable operators should have
explicit links to the associated cross-data-type comparison operators,
rather than hardwiring an assumption that they are named < and >.
entries, per pghackers discussion. This fixes aggregates to live in
namespaces, and also simplifies/speeds up lookup in parse_func.c.
Also, add a 'proimplicit' flag to pg_proc that controls whether a type
coercion function may be invoked implicitly, or only explicitly. The
current settings of these flags are more permissive than I would like,
but we will need to debate and refine the behavior; for now, I avoided
breaking regression tests as much as I could.
